Transfer: moving stock closer to buyers

Mercado Libre opened its second fulfillment center in Brazil. Stock had to move between warehouses to get closer to buyers, and sellers had to know where their inventory was at every step.

The problem

Moving stock between two fulfillment centers to get it closer to buyers, while sellers, warehouse operations and carriers all needed to know where each unit was.

What I did

  • Formed and led the team, from discovery to launch.
  • When another team's change to the inventory API blocked us (we needed new stock states), I agreed the API signature with them and we built a mock to develop and test against.
  • When their API was ready, the switch went without problems. We later expanded Transfer to Mexico.
